A fault inside the Maluku Sea Plate caused the West Halmahera earthquake: BMKG

Modeling results showed that an earthquake is not likely to cause a tsunami.

Jakarta (Antara) – The earthquake that rocked Halmahera Island in North Maluku Province on Tuesday morning was caused by a fault within the Maluku subsea plate, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

In a statement received here on Tuesday, the Dariono Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator noted that the shock was also felt in Minahasa District and Sangehe Islands District in North Sulawesi Province.

The agency’s analysis found that the quake, which struck at 8:44 a.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), had a magnitude of 5.9.

The epicenter was located at 2.11 degrees north latitude and 126.97 degrees east longitude.

Specifically, it was located in the sea, 77 kilometers (km) northwest of Luluda Sub-district, West Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, at a depth of 10 km.

“Given the location and depth of the epicenter, it was a shallow earthquake,” Dariono noted.

He stated that analysis of the source mechanism showed that the shock had an oblique error mechanism.

The earthquake was felt in Jalila Sub-district, North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) III-IV, causing many residents to flee buildings due to sudden strong tremors.

In Tupelo District, North Halmahera District, shocks were sensed in MMI III.

Meanwhile, the earthquake was felt in MMI II-III district of Bitung city, North Sulawesi Province. Furthermore, people on Siao Island, North Sulawesi Province, felt very weak shocks from MMI II.

“Modeling results showed that the earthquake is not likely to cause a tsunami because its size is too small to be able to create deformation on the sea floor that could disrupt the seawater column,” Dariono said.

As of 10:00 AM WIST, BMKG has not observed any aftershocks.

Daryono noted that the Maluku Sea is prone to earthquakes and tidal waves.

“Several strong earthquakes and tsunamis have occurred in the region, including those in 1608, 1845, 1852, 1857, 1889, 1907 and 1939,” he added.
