San Jose Earthquakes Participation Plan for the Football Fairgrounds Complex – NBC Bay Area

The club announced Tuesday that the San Jose Earthquakes and Santa Clara County are exploring the possibility of building a massive 10-field soccer complex at the county fairgrounds for the professional club and the public.

The county has agreed to an exclusive negotiation agreement with Seismic, allowing both sides to explore leasing and management agreements.

“This is a huge step toward our goal of having an elite training center and a unique home for all of our teams,” Earthquakes president Jared Shoali said in a statement. “As part of our club ethos, we wanted to seize an opportunity to not only provide a first-class pool for our professional and youth teams, but also to facilitate the development of the premiere youth and adult football facility for public use in Northern California. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Santa Clara County that She has a common vision for those goals.”

The sprawling complex will cover 34 acres of undeveloped land in the Umberger and Monterey Roads area, according to the club.

The club said that part of the complex will include four football pitches dedicated to the earthquake and its affiliated teams. At least three of these fields will be natural grass. The complex’s remaining six fields, all of which are lawn, will be available to the public throughout the year. All ten fields will contain lights.

“We are very excited about the opportunity for children and families to play and get outside in a healthy way,” Santa Clara County Superintendent Cindy Chavez said in a statement. “The Santa Clara County Fairgrounds will be open and accessible to our entire community. Once again, San Jose Earthquakes is investing in the community and team with state-of-the-art fields and training facilities.”

The complex will also house a 35,000-40,000-square-foot training center for the Earthquakes, their MLS Next Pro affiliate team and the Quakes Academy’s youth teams.

While the exclusive negotiation agreement is in effect for the next 12 months, the club and county will determine project costs and potential revenues, establish additional design and planning details, develop a community engagement plan, and formulate a proposed development agreement.

“We are excited about this initial agreement with Earthquakes Soccer to develop a mixed-use fairground football complex,” said Miguel Marquez, Santa Clara County’s chief operating officer, in a statement. “This is another step in exploring high-quality recreational opportunities at the fairgrounds. The county wants to ensure that everyone in our community, especially those in areas with limited outdoor recreational options, have the same opportunities to go out and learn how to play the world’s most popular sport: soccer” .
