The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) has asked Indiana schools to obtain ShakIN for earthquake preparedness by competing for their seismometer in their classrooms.

This initiative is designed to help school-aged children learn more about earthquake preparedness as well as the potential hazards of Hoosiers from an earthquake in Indiana.

According to IDHS, the state lies between two major seismic zones, and experts are predicting a major earthquake like the 1909 earthquake in the Wabash River Valley once again. The last observed earthquake in Indiana occurred on June 17, 2021, with its epicenter in Bloomingdale, Indiana.

Last fall, the William Tell Elementary team of Broadcast students participated in a video competition that… WTE was lucky to be in the top ten. It was one of two elementary schools to finish in the top ten. IDHS sent a representative down to present the seismograph award.

The captured video showed how Hoosiers can prepare for possible earthquakes. The stars of the video are Kaitlyn McWherter and Jana Fury in the fourth grade. Teacher Pat Garboe was in charge of the project.

In the video, the two students demonstrated the earthquake and then experienced what appeared to be a real earthquake while talking about how to prepare. The students hid behind bookshelves and shook them while others threw debris at the girls as they hid under the desk. This created the illusion of a real earthquake, while the girls continued to provide facts on how to prepare.

According to IDHS, “Raspberry Shake seismographs are easy-to-use, entry-level seismographs suitable for both active and passive seismic zones. The seismometer data will help students understand the behavior and science behind earthquakes and the data collected may lead to future collaboration with IDHS.”
