Historic Cal Poly Pomona Tower is being demolished – Daily Bulletin
On a recent sunny April morning, Robin Sinos and his family gathered together for a selfie on the Cal Poly Pomona campus.
The family’s background has been the iconic limestone building that’s been erected on top of the campus over the past 29 years, making it one of the most visible landmarks in the Pomona Valley.
But after years of financial and safety concerns, nearly 54,000 square feet of classrooms, the laboratory and administration building, and the adjoining registrar building are officially being demolished.
Come fall, the CLA Tower will be gone even though the classroom section of the complex will remain. Work to prepare the building for demolition began in March, including removal of non-repairable equipment and furniture, and full demolition is scheduled to begin in late May after the start. The demolition is expected to be completed by mid-August.
The fate of the CLA Building has taken many turns over the years, including several failed attempts to save it. Since its completion in 1993, the building has taxed operating and staff budgets due to a number of construction flaws and mechanical system malfunctions, according to Bruyn Bevans, senior project manager at Cal Poly Pomona.
It also sits on an earthquake fault, Bevans said, something that materialized years after the tower was completed.
He added, “It was not known at the time when they built the building, but with new technologies this information appeared later.” “The cost of the seismic upgrade that would be necessary to maintain the building did not make financial sense to conserve the space.”
Constructing a new building on the site is not possible, because building codes prohibit construction on land located above the fault line. Removing the tower also scratches one of the top priorities off the seismic safety list of the California State University chancellor’s office, according to officials.
Those hoping to see a big explosion during demolition will be disappointed. The work crews will use a crane and an excavator to demolish the CLA and Register buildings.
The demolition of the iconic Cal Poly Pomona CLA Tower has begun in Cal Poly Pomona as seen on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. The reason for the demolition is that the building is located on top of an active earthquake fault that makes future construction on the site impossible. Bevans said a scaffold would be placed on the building and one floor at a time would be removed. This method is expected to produce less noise, cause less disturbance to nearby classrooms, and protect the nearby Aratani Japanese Garden, as well as the underground power and water lines that feed nearby buildings.
Faculty and staff with offices on the classroom side of the CLA building will be temporarily relocated during the dismantling process due to safety and noise concerns.
According to the university, the classroom section of the CLA complex does not have the same structural flaws as the tower. So far, the classrooms have withstood the earthquakes and shown no signs of damage.
Meanwhile, there are proposals in the upcoming campus master plan to renovate and upgrade the classrooms in the complex.
After the tower was removed, plans were made to transform this part of the complex into a mixed-use green space with outdoor seating and study areas. The work is expected to extend until March 2023.
“Demolition of the building represents the best option from a financial and safety standpoint,” said Vice President of Facilities, Aaron Clem, in a press release in March. “Being good campus supervisors means making decisions based on what provides the greatest benefit to future generations of students.”
A time capsule embedded within one of the tower’s walls is expected to be moved. A plaque on the floor was discussed to locate the CLA building as a possible way to honor the structure, according to Bevans.

CLA Tower’s demise is bittersweet for some of the Cal Poly Pomona alumni who journeyed the eight-story structure during their college years.
Graduate Christopher Oswala, former president of Associated Students Inc. “There’s kind of sad because the famous landmark is coming down. I mean, you see it coming from Interstate 10, you can’t miss it.”
For graduate Manuel Muñoz, his fondest memories were of the CLA Tower when he got lost in it. He remembers that it was his first time on campus when he was a convert student, and he couldn’t find his way through the tight quarters of the tower.
“I lost my identity on my first day,” Muñoz said. “After all that, I walked up to the top of the building, looked outside and saw a view of the campus that I will never forget. This always stuck with me.”
Bevans, who teaches in the Department of Civil Engineering, said such sentimental feelings for the building have not resonated much with current students. The tower has been closed since 2018.
“Most of the students have no connection to (CLA Tower). Probably not many have ever set foot inside,” Bevans said.
Operations that were located in the CLA Tower moved to the 138,000-square-foot Student Services building in 2019, allowing the university to better accommodate students and streamline administrative services.
In recent years, the tower hasn’t done much but looms over a college campus that is mostly empty due to the pandemic that has canceled most in-person activities.
“The building is a landmark for the whole area mainly because you can see it going off Highways 10 and 57 and when you look at the campus from there, you see this building first,” Bevans said. “So when you leave, you won’t see this gigantic structure anymore.”
As Sainos wrapped up a campus tour of his son Diego, his wife, Yuko Kubota, said she wanted to get one last look at the sky scraping structure.
“This is one of the icons on campus and really gives Cal Polly personality,” Kubota said, adding that she regrets seeing the tower go. “It’s a shame but it’s time.”
