Commemorating the Cape Mendocino Earthquake – The Times-Standard

On April 25, 1992, the Cape Mendocino earthquake shook Humboldt County, injuring more than 400 people and destroying property worth over $60 million and remains by far the most destructive earthquake ever to hit the county.

The earthquake, which caused the only federal declaration of disaster ever issued after an earthquake in Humboldt County, celebrated its 30th anniversary Monday, and the Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Geology set up a website to celebrate the event.

“At least 100 homes in Ferndale, Rio del, and Scotia have fallen off their foundations. The earthquake triggered a small tsunami and caused aftershocks over the course of 18 hours with magnitudes of 6.5 and 6.6.

The web page, which can be found at https://rctwg.humboldt.edu/capemendo92, contains historical summaries and geological knowledge of the earthquake, as well as information on how earthquake and tsunami preparedness has changed since 1992. “For the people who are here, for the people who haven’t been here, we haven’t had this many earthquakes since then. “Just met someone last night, a new faculty member in our department, whose first earthquake was the December earthquake. She got the MyShake app on her phone. So she actually got a notification that the earthquake would happen about five seconds before the ground shook. That was the first earthquake so much that she was actually on alert for it and knew to be under the table and hold it while the ground was shaking,” said Dingler.
