Highlighting the risk of dying children suspected of being infected with a virus in Indonesia
JAKARTA – Hundreds of children in Indonesia are believed to have died from COVID-19, giving the southeast Asian country one of the highest child mortality rates in the world due to the new Corona virus, which experts around the world say poses little risk to young adults.
Pediatricians and health officials in the world’s fourth most populous country said that the high number of child deaths due to a disease that kills the elderly is mostly due to underlying factors, especially malnutrition, anemia and insufficient health facilities for children.
“Coved 19 proves that we must fight malnutrition,” Ahmed Urianto, a senior health ministry official, told Reuters.
He said that Indonesian children were trapped in the “Devil’s Circle”, a cycle of malnutrition and anemia which increased their exposure to the coronavirus. Compare malnourished children with weak structures that “collapse after an earthquake.”
Since Indonesia reported its first coronavirus infection in March, it has recorded 2,000 deaths, the highest in East Asia outside China.
According to a document by the Ministry of Health dated May 22 and revised by Reuters, a total of 715 people under the age of 18 were infected with the coronavirus, while 28 died.
More than 380 deaths were recorded among 7,152 children who were categorized as “observational patients”, meaning people with symptoms of acute coronavirus that had no other explanation but their tests did not confirm the infection.
Even the official figure for children who died from coronavirus, on May 28 as of May 22, will give Indonesia a high child mortality rate, 2.1% of the total.
Different countries use different age brackets in the stats but deaths for people under the age of 24 in the U.S. are just over 0.1% of deaths.
In Brazil, the number of suspected deaths of COVID under 19 years of age is 1.2%. In the Philippines, the mortality of people under the age of 19 is about 2.3% of the coronavirus outcome.
Triple burden
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund, Indonesia, a developing country with a population of 270 million people, suffers from a “triple burden of malnutrition” that includes stunting, anemia among mothers and obesity.
She says about one in three Indonesian children under the age of five is stunted.
“The nutritional status affects children’s immunity,” said Dr. Nastiti Kaswandani, a pediatric lung disease specialist in the capital, Jakarta.
“This is important in alleviating COVID infection.”
Pediatricians said the unprocessed health care system was also a problem.
“The biggest contrast in Indonesia is the availability of pediatric intensive care units,” said Sheila Potri Sundaawa, a pediatrician in Jakarta.
The Ministry of Health declined to provide data on childcare units, and a senior official said the system was not overwhelmed.
The lack of equipment is even more pronounced outside the capital.
Pediatrician Dominicos Hosada said that the hospital he worked on on Madura Island in East Java had no pediatric fans. A 11-year-old died of coronavirus there in March.
A father named Yansiah, who died a nine-month-old boy from COVID-19 on Lombok Island, told Reuters that the hospital does not have childcare units.
“Sincerely, if the hospital you went to has full facilities, it is likely that he will have survived,” Yansiahia said.
