San Francisco to increase wages for first teachers

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Corona) – San Francisco will launch a new initiative to invest up to $60 million annually to pay wage increases to the city’s 2,000+ early childhood teachers.

Mayor London Breed on Thursday announced what it called the first-of-its-kind early childhood teacher wage initiative in the country that will significantly raise tuition fees, increase benefits, improve working conditions and support educational attainment across the city. The new initiative will be led by the city’s Office of Early Care and Education (OECE).

“San Francisco needs to do more to support children and families, and this includes attracting and retaining early adopters who do the critical work of caring for our young children,” Mayor Breed said. “We know that early childhood experiences lay the foundation for subsequent success in academics and beyond. This initiative, and all the work we do around transforming early childhood care, is about providing support for early childhood experiences that will help us improve the future of our city and the lives of everyone here.”

The city said the investment would enable teachers to get more equitable pay for their work and hoped this would help attract new teachers to the field. By 2025, San Francisco intends to support a living wage of at least $28 an hour for all first-time teachers in city-funded programs, which serve more than 6,500 children ages 0-5 each year.

The initiative will increase the salary of each early teacher by approximately $8,000 to $30,000 annually.

“When top teachers are compensated fairly and have the resources they need, children thrive,” says Ingrid Mezquita, executive director of the OECE. “For too long, society has underestimated the critical role of first teachers, a workforce made up primarily of women of color. Increased wages for first teachers will ensure that the people who take care of our young children can continue to provide them with high-quality care and education.”

This program is funded by the commercial rent tax that voters passed in June 2018 with funds earmarked for servicing early child care programs in San Francisco. In addition to the wage increase, the city said it will continue to provide funding for programs to improve workplace conditions for first-time teachers, improving teacher job satisfaction and well-being. The city will also significantly expand eligibility for city-supported enrollment in high-quality early childhood education programs serving children ages 0-5.
