San Francisco Before the Earthquake: Great Remastered Footage

At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906, just as San Francisco, California, was beginning to wake up, an earthquake lasting less than a minute shook the city at its core. The tremors sparked a fire around the city that lasted for three days. The disaster killed an estimated 3,000 people and left half of the city’s 400,000 residents homeless as buildings collapsed and burned.

Just four days earlier, on April 14, 1906, motion picture photographers Miles Brothers shot footage of the city where it would never be seen again, capturing the transportation, fashion, and bustling atmosphere of San Francisco. Titled A Trip Down Market Street, the film is a point-of-view style video shot from the front of the cable car. The 116-year-old shot takes viewers eastward down Market Street, starting at Eighth Street and heading toward the cable car at the Ferry Building.

Recently, NASS video restorer reworked the footage, and the result feels like a trip back in time. Watching the excavated footage feels like riding on the front of the cable car, giving a front row seat to the chaotic traffic crisscrossing the street, hearing the sound of horses’ hooves, and the waving of excited children at the turn. The restoration included boosting the original 15 frames per second to 60, raising the image resolution to HD, and improving the sharpness and brightness of the image. While the AI-generated coloration and additional sound design are ambiance-specific and not necessarily historically accurate, they still give viewers a sense of what a cable car ride down Market Street might have been like in 1906.

The original footage is stored at Prelinger Archives in San Francisco. What you see online is a scan of a 35mm material, filmed by Harry J. Miles manually manning a Bell & Howell camera at the front of a tram trolley. The negative was conveyed by train to Miles’ office in New York on April 17, 1907, when the brothers were on their way to New York. When they heard the news of the earthquake, they sent the passive forward and returned to San Francisco, where they discovered their studios had been destroyed in fires.
