Voters decide whether or not to replace the Beaverton schools, or not

PORTLAND, Oregon (KOIN) – Voters in Beaverton will have to decide on a new 30-year bail, which, if passed, would raise about $723 million for schools.

The bond will replace two school buildings over 100 years old – Beaverton High School and Raleigh Hills Elementary School.

Part of the money, $40 million, will go toward making school buildings earthquake-resistant. Currently, 40 schools in the district do not meet the earthquake resistance standards.

The construction project manager, Eric Bolkin, explained how the existing schools are being built.

“I can put pressure directly on the building, and it resists this force very strongly. However, in the event of an earthquake, the ground does not move up and down,” Bolkin explained while physically demonstrating the situation with LEGOs. “It moves back and forth, which puts a different force on the structure, which makes them want to tip over. So, when the ground shakes in the event of an earthquake, the structures tend to tip over.”

The point of seismic upgrades is to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“We build the shear wall into the padding between the columns. Then we attach the shear wall to the uprights with clamps typically at the top and bottom of the wall,” he said. “Now, as the same movement occurs, the sternum wall remains. An unsupported wall does not.”

This will also protect electrical service, fire sprinklers, and natural gas lines while ensuring that the roof and lights do not fall off during an earthquake.

Polkin said that schools will be able to function as emergency shelter, which means people will have a safe place to go in case the largest shelter occurs.

“We are asking for a lot, but we know that by investing in strong, healthy schools, it benefits our entire community,” Timchuk said.

If the bond is passed, the bond will also begin reforming the older middle schools: Cedar Park, Five Oaks, Highland Park, Meadow Park, Mountain View and Whitford. Other schools will be addressed in the proposed bonds in the future.

For the average Beaverton homeowner, the bond means an additional $76 in taxes annually. If the proposed bond is not passed, the projects will not proceed.
