Peru: Earthquake probability above 8.5 | News

According to the Institute of Geophysics of Peru (IGP), there is a high probability of an earthquake above 8.5 degrees in the capital, Lima.

“We’re talking about an earthquake that has probably not been repeated since 1746 and is likely to exceed a magnitude of 8.5; that’s why Indeci (National Institute of Civil Defense) is now conducting drills on earthquakes of 8.5 and 8.8, which is what IGP President Hernando Tavira told Local America Television. “It could happen in Lima.”

The head of the IGP said that Lima is the region of the country in which the greatest energy has been accumulated due to the seismic silence that has existed in the capital since the eighteenth century when the last great movement occurred.

Moreover, Tavira said the seismic warning system, developed by Indeci, will be operational in early 2023 via a mobile phone to warn residents if movement occurs.

On May 12, the National Seismological Center of Peru recorded a 5.5-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter 30 km from the Chilca region in the province of Lima. The seismic accident left one person dead and eight injured.
