Four-time Ghanaian Premier League champion AshantiGold has been demoted to the country’s third tier after being found guilty of match-fixing in the judgment of a massive earthquake that will rock the feathers in the West African nation.

Inter Allied defender Hashem Moussa jumped off the bench to score a deliberate goal in an attempt to thwart an alleged match-fixing plot – and insisted his team congratulated him for spoiling the ‘pre-agreed’ result during a league match against AshantiGold last year.

Musa came onto the field for Eleven Is To One with a 5-0 score and scored two own goals in the last 12 minutes before walking off the field as the match finished 7-0 on the final day of the season on July 11.

The defender admitted to the media that he deliberately scored an own goal – which went viral on social media in a move to spoil what he believes to be a pre-arranged result for betting reasons.

The match between AshantiGold and Inter Allies, which resulted in a 7-0 cricket score in favor of the Miners, is under investigation by the authorities over allegations of match-fixing.

Hashem scored six and seven goals against his club and admitted that he scored those goals to destroy a planned bet on a specific outcome for the last game of the season with his already relegated club.

“I heard at our hotel that a bet had been placed for a correct score 5-1 against my Inter Allies team. I promised my coach that if he allowed me to play from the bench, I would spoil the bet. And then the match, my team congratulated me.”

His justification elicited mixed reactions. While receiving praise for not condoning match-fixing, he was criticized by others for deliberately putting the ball into his own net, which led to Ghanaian football being ridiculed on the world stage.

Officials and players from both teams took turns helping police investigate immoral behaviour, with authorities relying heavily on the defender’s allegations.

AshantiGold finished the ninth season and thus remains a Ghanaian Premier League club, meanwhile, the Allies Inter were relegated.

In 2007, Nania FC, Okwahu United, Great Mariners FC and Tudu Mighty Jets were demoted to the Fourth Division after being found guilty of match-fixing.

Nania and the Mariners were equal on points in their group and needed to win their final matches to qualify for the country’s top flight.

Nania, led by Abedi Pele, beat Okwaw United 31-0, while the Great Mariners defeated Mighty Jets 28-0 in the league matches held earlier this year.

However, after successful appeals, the four clubs maintained their second-tier status but cut the ban for one season.
