St. Louis, Missouri has been named QuakeSmart Community by the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH)

Gateway City became the first in the country to be awarded the honorary title of earthquake resistance

TALLASSIE, Florida, May 18, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Today, the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) named St. Louis, Missouri, the first city in the United States to receive a QuakeSmart Society honorary designation. This appointment is part of FEMA’s QuakeSmart Education, Outreach and Communication program that directs businesses and organizations to take action to protect employees and customers from earthquake injuries, prevent or reduce damage to buildings, and help ensure business continuity.

FLASH is proud to recognize the leadership of St. Louis for its dedication to building earthquake resilience.

The FLASH Partnership selected the city for nomination based on high performance scores in the ISO Building Code Effectiveness Rating Table (BCEGS) and Public Protection Rating (PPC®) as well as excellence in comprehensive business training, community outreach, planning integrated with the school system, and establishment as a NOAA StormReady® community, and overall leadership participation.

St. Louis lies within the New Madrid Seismic Zone, classified by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as high risk, and faces a 40% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 or greater within the next 50 years.
