Match summary and highlights: San Jose Earthquakes 3-2 Portland Timbers

Match summary and highlights: San Jose Earthquakes 3-2 Portland Timbers

In a disappointment match after last weekend’s high, the Portland Timbers dropped their decision 3-2 on the road to the San Jose Earthquakes. Portland had two corner kicks from Chrythian Paredes and Bill Tuiluma, but were canceled out with a header from Jackson Yoel and a brace from Gameiro Montero to give the hosts the three points.

Faced with a game on a short respite, the Timbers sent out a side turn to keep players fresh. New man Nathan Fogaka gets a new pinnacle, alongside Santiago Moreno and Marvin Luria. Pablo Bonilla made the start for Josecarlos van Ranken, who was suspended after receiving a red card in the last game.

A strong start to the Portland match saw Chrythian Paredes score the first goal of the match in the 18th minute from a corner kick. San Jose then increased the pressure and equalized in the 31st minute as Jackson Yoel headed home a cross from former Timbers player Jeremy Ibobisi.

Portland struggled after conceding its own net, and the hosts made progress in the final stages of the first half through a lightning fast counter-attack by Gameiro Monteiro.

On the backs of some offensive submarines, Timbers came out more determined in the second half. This determination was rewarded with another goal from a free kick, with Bill Tuiluma scoring his fourth goal of the season.

As the game began to turn into an on-and-off affair full of bugs, San Jose was able to regain control – and regain his lead late in the game. In the 80th minute, Montero scored his double after getting a cross in the middle of the penalty area, devoid of any defender from the Timbers team nearby. His goal would be the spread, giving the homeowners the three points.

Highlights

3′ Nathan rode his horse, forced a spin, and seemed to stumble. However, no error was calculated.

11′ First real chance of the match as Yimmi Chara collected the ball at the top of the penalty area after some great through passes. But Chara’s shot went sailing over the bar.

15′ A dangerous cross was shown in front of Jazz’s goal and Ivacic passed everyone in the penalty area.

18′ Nathan Fogaça did a great job chasing an extra pass, then pasted Francesco Calvo for a cross shot towards goal. Cleared by, uh, Nathan (San Jose one) from a corner kick from Timbers…

18’… which Portland tapped to open the scoring. Marvin Luria swung in a peach ball toward the near post, and birthday boy Christian Paredes was the first to meet her. His peek threw the ball over the goalkeeper into the net to make it 1-0 to the Timbers.

24′ Nathan almost made it 2-0 as he chased after a loose touch from the San Jose goalkeeper and almost won the ball.

27′ Nathan fired a shot from distance after winning in midfield. Flew widely and out.

31′ San Jose equalized with a header from Jackson Yoel. Former Timbers striker Jeremy Ibobisi made his way past Pablo Bonilla, then smashed a cross into the middle of the penalty area. Yueill came in bossy in the boot to hit the ball past Ivacic and into the top corner of the net.

34′ Timbers attacked another double as they found Santiago Moreno Paredes in the penalty area. Paredes had a chance to get two goals in the first half, but his low shot was far.

35′ San Jose won a free kick after Dario Zubaric performed a moving screen on Ibubisi. In the free kick that followed, Ivacic stopped, and poured it, but he cleared his mistake in time.

44′ San Jose took the lead with a counter-kick that would make the Timbers proud (if they weren’t the ones to score). With Portland’s bodies rising on the field after a free kick, the quakes forced a spin and slashed in the other direction. Cady Coyle passed through Gameiro Montero, who shot the ball into the Slovenian goal into the bottom corner.

45′ + 1 Paredes with a late chance to settle things, but a side ball from inside the penalty area sailed wide.

The first half ended with Timbers delaying. After an encouraging start to the game, Portland shriveled after they opened the scoring, and the Earthquakes took their chances to take the lead.

46′ Sebastian Blanco and Eric Williamson were introduced to Marvin Luria and Santiago Moreno, as Giovanni Savarese sought to turn the tide of the match.

54′ Bill Tuiluma curled a free kick from a dangerous position towards goal but was cleared.

58′ The Timbers grabbed a tie after a period of constant pressure. Off a corner kick from Williamson, Tuiluma circled past the defense to land the ball into the back of the net with a powerful header.

66′ The match was a bit weak in the minutes after the goal, as multiple tough challenges disrupted the course of the match. Several players were shown yellow cards in the ensuing brawls.

70′ A dangerous moment as Kikanovic challenged Toiluma to take a shot into the penalty area, but missed the defender in the process.

74′ San Jose took back control of what became a very choppy second half and increased pressure on the Portland goal.

78′ Timbers brilliant counterattack ended with Nathan finding at the top of the penalty area. Nathan’s shot was of a variety, and it ended up as a weak ball at the goalkeeper.

80′ San Jose led again – and again it was Gamero Montero. A low cross from the near post found Montreux wide open in the middle of the penalty area, who curled the net past Timbers’ unconscious defence.

Despite some attempts to move the ball forward, Timbers lacked the coordination necessary to create any tangible chances, and the final whistle blew with Portland on the wrong side of the score 3-2.

The Timbers will have little time to lick their wounds, as they return to Providence Park on Sunday, May 20 to face Philadelphia Union at 7 p.m. Pacific.
