The Data History Museum reimagines museums by launching the world’s first NFT-supported collection of earthquake artifacts

Built on the Algorand blockchain, the first of a series of historical data history artifacts to use the US Geological Survey’s open API to create real-time assets originating from earthquakes around the world.

MELBOURNE, Australia, May 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The History of Data Museum, a MakerX project, has sold its Genesis collection, including the world’s first verifiable digital artifact, representing a 4.67-magnitude earthquake in Hawaii and has been sold At the auction of 1050 Algos, 50% of the proceeds were donated to scientific research and 50% to disaster relief.

The Data History Museum is set up to produce NFT artifacts of all major historical events as they happen. For example, the initial implementation creates an NFT for every major earthquake that occurs worldwide. Through automation that takes advantage of data from the US Geological Survey’s Open API, the NFT minting of each earthquake is automatic and real-time, and also includes important event-related metadata such as the magnitude, depth, longitude, latitude of the site, and more.

Before now, historical artifacts were physical objects containing data that could be extracted to verify their authenticity and historical significance; Data that cannot be reproduced artificially. This quality of verifiable exclusivity – or immutability – is part of what qualifies the thing as an authentic historical artifact.

Think, for example, of the Rosetta Stone. This artifact consists of explicit and implicit data (carvings, carbon dating, etc.) that enables researchers to establish its authenticity beyond doubt, and makes it unrepeatable. These types of artifacts are essential for scholars and historians seeking to understand our past and inform our future.

As humanity expands beyond the physical world into a digital one, the Museum of Data History understands the necessity of a digital system to keep track of historical artifacts that meet the same verifiable authenticity criteria as identified for physical items. The digital archives currently used by museums and institutions are not enough, as they can be destroyed, tampered with or completely erased.

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, offer a technical solution to this challenge. As specialized data structures, NFTs are able to facilitate the production of unique, verifiable digital objects, complete with protection against long-term tampering and redundancy. The Data History Museum’s detailed white paper explains how NFTs are classified as legitimate historical artifacts.

The Museum of Data History believes that blockchain will become the basis for the most reliable and accessible historical record, and that a concerted effort to produce NFT artifacts for all major historical events will enable scholars to study the events of the twenty-first century and beyond with confidence.

To support the project, the Museum of Data History leverages the Algorand chain – a carbon-negative Layer-1 protocol that is scalable, developer-friendly and has the low transaction fees required to allow thousands of artifacts to be minted continuously.

Matt Davis, CEO of MakerX and co-founder of the Data History Museum, commented, “We are huge fans and supporters of science, and we are really excited about the possibilities of this technology. We are building the world’s first digital museum that is curated by all kinds of authentic, verifiable historical artifacts. For all of humanity to enjoy. Perhaps digital artifacts will one day have as great an impact on our understanding of humanity as the Rosetta Stone.”

After earthquakes, the Data History Museum plans to produce artifacts for all kinds of events, from hurricanes and solar flares, to scientific discoveries and election results.

But the data history museum’s vision goes beyond just artefacts. The museum plans to share the proceeds from the sale of the artifacts with the scholars and researchers who provide data briefs. This gives scholars an entirely new source of funding, reducing their reliance on grants and the need to prioritize research that serves the interests of financial backers.
