Our geographers have revealed how large earthquakes can alter the physical features of the surrounding landscape.

Researchers studied soil material deposits from Baringa Lake, New Zealand, by applying a set of geochemical techniques to help understand erosion patterns at different levels of the landscape surrounding the lake.

Soil data saved from the past thousand years, during which four major earthquakes occurred, were used to reconstruct erosion patterns during and after these earthquakes.

Changing wear patterns

The result is the first evidence that repeated large earthquakes cause erosion on high ground, while earthquakes are less effective in modifying the higher portions of the physical landscape.

The results showed that erosion patterns changed dramatically after earthquakes, starting from higher levels, which in turn affected the ground below the hillsides by changing how they erode over time.

In contrast, our researchers also found that erosion caused by severe storm precipitation occurred at low levels during the earthquake intervals on the side of the lake hill, but was still affected by the high level of erosion caused by seismic events, with the drilling of new water channels and channels outside.
