Jessica Hawkins is racing and stunt driver arriving at Karahengkar Hydropower Station recently when filming an advertisement for the 2023 Range Rover Sport SUV. In order to showcase the capabilities of the car, she drove the embankment avoiding dangerous falls and braved a torrent of water on the road. The ascent showed that the car could withstand 750 tons per minute of the torrent of water flowing down the slope of the Karahangukar Dam. It was a dangerous drive because if traction was lost, the car would be thrown 90m below down to the bottom of the valley below.

Happy with the project

Icelandic production company Polarama filmed and produced the advertisement here in Iceland. Steinarr Logi Nesheim Managing Director of Polarama is very happy with the project.

“We saw right away that this ad would be a great showcase for Iceland’s wonderful nature,” says Nysheim. However, Land Rover has come with its challenges. “They asked if it could be done, and we had to think about how to make the impossible possible.”

When asked about driving up the rapids, he didn’t want to reveal much, but said there was some celluloid magic involved.

The danger was real

Bergljót Mist Georgsdóttir, marketing director for BL that imports Land Rover in Iceland, told mbl.is that Land Rover had obtained permission from Landsvirkjun and all relevant land owners before the announcement was launched. It says all security measures were in place at all times.

She adds that it was incredible to imagine the courage that an amazing driver would have to take to drive the water ramp. “They wanted to prove the power of the Range Rover Sport and they knew Iceland was the ultimate test of the car. There were no wires attached to the car and the danger was real. If the driver had lost traction the car would have fallen.”
