Hurricane Agatha gathers strength towards southwestern Mexico

The hurricane is likely to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, Oaxaca, the Mexico Weather Service warns.

The country’s weather service has warned that the first hurricane of the Pacific season, Agatha, has rapidly strengthened off the west coast of Mexico as it likely hits Monday as a Category 3 storm.

Rising sea temperatures and the hurricane’s slow speed may give it plenty of time to strengthen before it roars ashore, Alejandra Mendes, general coordinator of the Mexican National Weather Service (SMN), said in a video conference Sunday.

As of Sunday afternoon, Agatha had already climbed into a Category 2 storm on the Sapphire-Simpson scale as it was spinning about 295 kilometers west of Puerto Angel, Mexico.

“The hurricane is likely to make landfall in Category 3 between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco in Oaxaca,” Mendes said, adding that she expected to make landfall on Monday.

Preventive measures

Agatha was packing sustained winds of a maximum of 175 kilometers per hour, as it was traveling north at about two kilometers per hour, according to a report from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 2100 GMT.

Authorities in the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Chiapas encouraged preventive measures starting Saturday, such as asking residents to protect property near coastal areas and calling on residents to take cover.

They also closed the ports of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

Popular surf destinations in Puerto Escondido and Huatulco have set up temporary shelters with a capacity of 26,800 people and arranged potential accommodations for 5,200 others in local hotels.
