Scientists train mice to rescue earthquake survivors buried under rubble

Scientists are training mice to rescue earthquake survivors while wearing small backpacks that contain microphones and location trackers so rescuers can track and talk to them.

Seven rodents have so far been trained to make their way through the wreck. It only takes two weeks to fully prepare them. Mice were chosen because of their size and agility, making them the ideal companion in disaster areas.

The project is led by scientist Dr Donna Keane, 33, from Glasgow. She has been working in Morogoro, Tanzania, for the past year for the non-profit organization APOPO as part of their “Hero Rats” project, reports Metro.

Kane, who has studied ecology at the University of Strathclyde before and also holds a PhD from the University of Stirling, was fascinated by how quickly mice learn and train.

She has brushed off misconceptions about ferrets being unhealthy and labeled them as “social” creatures. She believes that these well-trained rats will save countless lives one day.

Mice will be able to get into small spaces to reach victims buried under the rubble. We’re not in a real situation yet, we have an imaginary wreck site. When we get the new backpacks, we’ll be able to hear where we are from and where the rat is, inside the wreckage. “We have the ability to talk to victims through mice,” Kane was quoted as saying.

The rodents will have a chance to work in the field when sent to earthquake-prone Turkey, to work with the search and rescue team, GAE, according to the Metro newspaper.
