The small town of Otago could face “severe” liquefaction and flooding if a moderate earthquake strikes

If an earthquake hits the small town of Otago in Glenorchy, it could face worse fluidization than Christchurch experienced in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquakes.

Two new reports show that the town’s exposure to flooding may exacerbate the impacts, causing severe damage and vertical subsidence.

The danger is real with a 75% chance that the Alpine Fault will erupt in the next 50 years, destroying parts of the South Island and cutting off lakeside towns surrounded by mountains like Queenstown and Glenorchy.

Some officials say the impact of such an earthquake will be like “Christchurch 2011 on doping” and will be long-lasting for tourism in the region.

My Glenorchy Report asserts that a moderate to large earthquake or flood event affecting the city, approximately 45 kilometers from Queenstown, could have severe effects on a population of 450, its infrastructure and property.

The Otago Regional Council will consider the reports at its meeting on Thursday.

In a statement, the council said it is working with partners, including Queenstown Lakes District Council, to develop a natural hazard adaptation strategy in Glenorchy and surrounding areas.

“The effects of liquefaction and lateral spread in Glenorchy may be similar or worse than in the worst affected areas of Christchurch during the events of the 2010-2011 earthquake sequence,” the regional council report said.

Glenorchy is located approximately 45 km by road or boat from Queenstown.

Previous reports have shown possible liquefaction in Glenorchy during a major earthquake and flooding affected homes in the town on several occasions, most recently in November 1999 and February 2020.

The board said the latest reports provided a better understanding of the potential risks and impacts.

The city has a small population, but the surrounding area is popular with tourists and increasingly home to notable individuals seeking privacy, such as Academy Award-winning director Jane Campion.

Glenorchy Camp has been singled out as an example of a place well prepared for an earthquake.

In 2018, Camp Glenorchy, which includes a solar farm, rainwater storage, composting toilets and an earthquake-resistant building was identified as an example of a well-prepared place for a large-scale earthquake.

The model results also show that large portions of Kinloch Road, and portions of Glenorchy Rottborn Road at the foot of Mount Alfred, would have been submerged during major flood events.
