Choice of Pulte as top spy adviser fuels fears of Trump vote tampering

Bill Pulte, the acting director of national intelligence, sowed fear by choosing as his chief of staff a Republican Party election lawyer who oversaw an election observation program that included Jack Posobiec and other conservative conspiracy theorists. The attorney, Christina Norton, also appears to have no experience working in the intelligence community.

“It’s horrible,” a former senior US intelligence official told MS NOW on Saturday. “Not only does Norton have absolutely no national security or intelligence training, experience, or expertise, but his primary qualifications appear to be his loyalty to Pulte and his embrace of absurd election interference conspiracies.”

Pulte’s choice of Norton is also likely to increase Democrats’ concerns that President Donald Trump intends to use the office of the director of national intelligence to interfere in the midterm elections. Pulte, a loyalist with no intelligence experience, has used his current position as head of the federal mortgage agencies to refer the president’s political rivals to federal criminal prosecution.

The New York Times first reported Norton’s appointment.

The former senior intelligence official, who requested anonymity due to fears of retaliation, told MS NOW that the choice “signals as clearly as possible that Pulte was appointed to ODNI to abuse the awesome power of the U.S. intelligence community to interfere in the upcoming midterm elections.”

Norton, when contacted by MS NOW by phone, declined to comment and referred questions to an ODNI spokesperson. The spokesperson declined to comment on Norton but defended Pulte’s tenure.

“Acting Director Pulte and his team are focused on implementing President Trump’s national security priorities while faithfully executing ODNI’s statutory mission,” the spokesperson told MS NOW. “We are leading the intelligence community to provide President Trump with elite, apolitical intelligence that keeps America safe. »

Rep. Jim Himes, D-Connecticut, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Friday that Congress would ensure that the ODNI under Pulte “reports on legitimate foreign threats to the election, not imaginary threats from Donald Trump.”
