Mamugo earthquake: BNPB chief urges evacuees to go home

Mamugo, West Sulawesi (Antara) – The head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Lt. Gen. Suhariyanto, has appealed to evacuees from the Mamugo earthquake, West Sulawesi, to go home immediately.

“We are ensuring that the situation is under control. Please, people, don’t panic, go home immediately,” Suhariyanto said during a meeting at the West Sulawesi governor’s office on Thursday.

He added that if the evacuees were afraid to go home, he suggested setting up tents next to their homes.

“With the improvement (the technological seismic detector), once yesterday’s accident, there were four aftershocks, but all (the intensity) decreased, so we made sure that the situation was under control,” Suhariyanto said.

However, he recommended that the local government establish an emergency response task force to validate the data on the impact of the 5.8-magnitude earthquake.

He added, “The emergency response takes place during the initial treatment. Initial information indicates that 17 people have been injured. Do not leave anything untreated.”

He also urged relevant parties to search for seriously injured victims and damaged buildings.

“BNPB will help the community and their homes. Please, district chief, immediately expedite data collection, BNPB will help immediately,” Suhariyanto said.

Moreover, he hoped that the repetition of information about the disaster vulnerability of West Sulawesi would continue to increase public awareness.

“Later, I will collaborate with the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) to improve the culture of disaster awareness,” he said.

During Suharyanto’s visit to West Sulawesi, he also delivered ready-to-use (DSP) funds worth 250 million rupees, and logistical assistance to the West Sulawesi Provincial Government.

Meanwhile, the acting governor of West Sulawesi, Akmal Malik, said people were still worried about the earthquake that occurred the previous year.

“The 2021 earthquake was really haunting our community. So, after this earthquake, a lot of people were quickly evacuated,” Malik said.
