Huge “earthquake fish” fishing in eastern Taiwan | Taiwan news

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Taiwanese fisherman on Thursday (June 9) caught a huge paddlefish (Regalecus russelii) off the east coast that was larger than an impressive specimen caught in 2020.

That afternoon, 31-year-old fisherman Lin Ai Fan (林奕) went fishing off the coast of Xianglan Village in Taimali Township in Taymal Province. At about 2 p.m., he noticed movement and, judging by the sharp angle at which the fishing rod had suddenly bent, his intuition told him he had caught a huge fish, the Liberty Times reported.

Lin said that the strength with which the fish were fighting was enormous. He tried to roll the paddlefish a few times, but it kept pulling.

After a back-and-forth battle that lasted a full 40 minutes, Lin finally managed to capture Leviathan. When he brought the fish ashore, other fishermen rushed to take pictures of the giant sea creature, which turned out to be over six meters long and weighing 130 kilograms.

Ho Yuan-hsing (何), director of the Fisheries Research Institute of Eastern Marine Biology Research Center, told the news agency that the paddlefish caught was Russell’s paddlefish (Regalecus russelii), known in Taiwan as “Dragon Palace Messenger.” or “quake fish”. Ho said it is a species of paddle fish in the family Regalecidae.

Hu said that this paddlefish was quite long, and may have been brought into the shallow water by some changes in turbidity or in the seafloor environment due to the recent torrential rains of the plum. The expert said that the paddlefish usually only appeared after they were injured or sick and washed up on the shore by the waves.

Hu said that this was the first time he had heard of paddlefish fishing by fishermen. When paddlefish are caught alive, Hu said, they are considered very healthy because sick fish generally don’t eat the bait.

Lynn told the media that he caught the paddlefish with a fishing lure.

On November 6, fishermen caught a paddle fish with a length of 490 cm and a weight of about 45 kg. It was caught off the coast of Dong’ao in Yilan Province and purchased by the owner of Fumei Huo Seafood Restaurant (富) for NT$16,000 ($560).
