Preparatory examination for earthquake for a year
Here’s a special Unshaken update for all of our readers, whether you’ve completed the series or are just starting:
Hi, Angelino is unshakable. It’s been nearly a year since the Los Angeles Times first published Unshaken, our guide to earthquake preparedness and resilience.
In that time, from roughly Death Valley to Ensenada, Mexico, we’ve experienced more than 1,400 earthquakes, according to Caltech data. But most of those we hardly feel, if we feel them at all. The vast majority were less than 3.
Only two were above 4.5 degrees. One was 4.6 near the Salton Sea in early June 2021. Then it hit 4.6 off the coast of Ensenada in April 2022. Outside southern California, an underwater volcano erupted in the South Pacific and raised tsunami warnings here on the West Coast and elsewhere (damage was minimal, on Although two deaths have been reported in Peru).
When you felt these earthquakes or saw tsunami alerts, did your mind spring to your earthquake toolkit and family plan? What if you remember where the gas shut-off valve is? How should you respond if you are near the beach and a tsunami warning is issued? Did your smartphone send alerts from the MyShake app?
Here’s the thing: This is an earthquake country. We cannot control where and when the Earth shakes. And shake it will.
What we Southern Californians (and others who live in earthquake-prone regions of the world; hey, Norcal, Oregon and Mexico!) can do is how prepared and resilient we are. That’s Unshaken’s goal – to help you prepare and help you survive after a disaster.
So let’s review and update a little bit of what we covered in Unshaken.
1. Extract your toolkit
Time to browse the collection you’ve collected or purchased and check expiration dates on all foods. Anything so close to date that you can eat, donate, or throw — then replenish during your next trip to the grocery store.
Also, if you have drinking water stored, start recycling it. Drink or use what you can, and replenish it. You want a minimum of three gallons of water per person (a gallon per day for three days). (And don’t forget the pets.)
Do you have spare batteries? Check their expiration dates. Are all the cables, cords, and chargers you packed away still attached to the devices you use often? Are the extra clothes still appropriate? Is there a new family member to be counted? Check medications, extra pairs of glasses, and documents to make sure they’re up-to-date.
Finally, did you buy fire extinguishers last year? Set up a monthly reminder on your phone to check the pressure gauge, or as directed by the manufacturer.
2. Also your own navigation toolkit
Give at once the items in your commute kit – in your car or perhaps the backpack you use on the go. Is everything still ok?
One more thing: Have you returned to the on-site workplace sometime in the last year? Maybe things have changed – I know this is true in my office. So look out for emergency exit signs and learn how to leave the building in the event of a disaster.
3. Check inside your house
If you’re like me, you didn’t finish all the projects you wanted to get done last summer. You still need to get bedroom window safety film and install safety latches on the cabinets that can open. You may also need to install a large new piece of furniture or a TV. it is time.
Also, take a minute and look at your water heater. Still tied up properly? Does it leak? amazing. Back to ignoring it.
4. Also outside your home
Well Well. Your water heater is outside. Take that minute to look at it now.
Also, do you remember how to cut off gas, water, and electricity in your home?
Perhaps now is the time to call in a plumber to install the automatic gas shut-off valve.
And did you start researching about foundation retrofitting but later gave up this tab among the “I’ll get back to that” tasks in your phone’s browser? (No, I’ve never done that. Why do you ask?) Make today the day you call the contractor or see if you qualify for the state Earthquake Brace and Bolt program.
5. Review and update your family plan
Get the family together to do something fun – see your family emergency plan. (Then eat ice cream.)
Perhaps it’s time to allocate a more important phone number in memory. Some information may have changed – update it. Review your meeting place: is it still right for you in most situations?
6. Also your money
In these turbulent times, remove one thing from your list of concerns. Store a few hundred dollars in smaller bills in your earthquake kit. If electronic payments are disrupted by a major earthquake, you’re all set.
Also review your earthquake insurance policy. Is it still active? Did you add any new valuables to your collections? Trust them. Has anything changed with your home? takes pictures. Are you able to reduce the deductible a little? Contact your insurance company to see if you qualify for a lower premium.
finally
The reason all this matters, as seismologist Lucy Jones wrote in a guest article for The Times, is that we all want Southern California to remain a vibrant place to live for many decades to come. This can only happen if the neighbors talk to the neighbors and help each other when needed. This is how our neighborhoods will be rebuilt. So that you can enjoy summers of cooking, beach days, and group parties, extend an invite to a neighbor. Get to know them a little more. And maybe even encourage them to sign up for Unshaken.
Thank you for reading and supporting The Times Press. Please consider subscribing if you haven’t already.

One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
