Metrolink introduces earthquake early warning technology that automatically stops or slows trains
Metrolink’s Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system is advanced with new technology that automatically applies the brakes to safely and quickly slow or stop trains in the event of an earthquake.
An earlier version of the technology that Metrolink deployed in September 2021 had the ability to send automated messages to train crews to start slowing or stopping a train, but it did not include automated enforcement of the brakes. The next phase of rollout of this technology is being tested along the Metrolink 91/Peres Valley line between Riverside and Peres and is supported through a partnership with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Metrolink’s EEW is based on an interface between the USGS-operated ShakeAlert system and the Metrolink Positive Train Control (PTC) system. ShakeAlert is an EEW system that provides critical data within seconds of earthquake detection, including earthquake origin, time, location and strength, so that people and systems can be alerted before the shaking begins. PTC is designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed deviations and other unsafe actions.
“The combination of ShakeAlert and PTC is a real game-changer for Metrolink,” said Darren Keitel, CEO of Metrolink. “This latest progress is a reflection of Metrolink’s continued leadership in system safety and a milestone in our commitment to protecting our passengers, workers and infrastructure.”
The new system will also provide improved data to support rail network inspection and the resumption of service after the earthquake.
“The program identifies places on the rail network that require protection to safely continue rail operations,” said Robert-Michael de Groot of the USGS Seismology Center in Pasadena. “We are excited to work together to provide real-time earthquake early warning. Alerts powered by ShakeAlert.”
The new technology processes ShakeAlert data automatically and sends PTC messages to trains in the affected area based on the intensity of the detected earthquake. This latest system update adds a PTC to automatically stop or slow trains when needed.
“Safety is always Caltrans’s top priority,” said Stephen Keck, Caltrans Acting Director. “The department is adopting new and innovative technologies like this that will help protect passengers in the event of earthquakes.”
The Perris Valley Division of 91/Perris Valley Line was selected for pilot testing because the test would have little impact on freight train traffic.
ShakeAlerts does not expect earthquakes. Instead, the alert indicates that an earthquake has begun, shaking is expected, and precautionary measures must be taken. After the pilot phase on the Perris Valley Line, employees will evaluate its performance for potential expansion across the Metrolink system.
