Afghanistan earthquake: Magnitude 6 earthquake hits Kabul – fears of widespread damage | world | News

Preliminary information shows that the earthquake hit southeast of Gardez, just over 100 kilometers from the capital, Kabul, at 1:56 am PST (Pakistan Standard Time) on Wednesday. The earthquake is believed to have hit several cities in Pakistan, including Islamabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Kohat as well.

It happened at a depth of 51 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said in a tweet that the tremor was felt at a distance of approximately 500 km by 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

There were no immediate reports of damage or deaths.

In January, two earthquakes – just hours apart – measuring 4.9 and 5.3 on the Richter scale struck a rural area not easily accessible by road in western Badghis County.

At least 26 people were killed, homes were destroyed and families were left waiting for help for days, with some spending several nights exposed to sub-zero temperatures.

“We lost everything we had. Homeless. Everything is buried under the rubble,” Abdul Rahman al-Naji, whose house was damaged, told AFP.

When the tremors started, he said, “everyone started screaming.”

“Everyone from every house just ran away from their homes and fled,” Abdul Rahman added.
