USGS says multiple earthquakes hit South Carolina, as expected

A series of earthquakes rocked South Carolina on Wednesday, and the US Geological Survey said they were part of a larger swarm ongoing in the state.

On Wednesday, the US Geological Survey recorded several small earthquakes and at least two of them greater than 3.0 intensity. Since Sunday, more than half a dozen have been reported.

Most are concentrated near Elgin, South Carolina, northeastern Columbia.

According to the USGS, some of the larger earthquakes can be felt as far away as Spartanburg and Augusta in Georgia, Charlotte in North Carolina and North Charleston, just over 80 miles away.

These recent earthquakes are part of an ongoing event in central South Carolina that began in late December last year, the USGS said. About 40 earthquakes occurred, with magnitudes between 1.3 and 3.5, with four previous earthquakes exceeding 3.0. Wednesday’s earthquakes were among the strongest recorded in this swarm.

Earthquakes can be felt in this remote part of the United States due to the geological structure and the fact that most earthquakes are very shallow, occurring less than five miles underground.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in the state, the USGS said, however, that such a large number of earthquakes in such a short time is unusual. The US Geological Survey said it was “extremely rare for them to have earthquakes of a much larger earthquake.” However, the swarm is likely to continue in the near future.

While many reports of shaking have reached the USGS, there have been few, if any, reports of damage during the swarm.

Union County, South Carolina set the record for largest earthquake in the area with a magnitude of 4.8, and the nearby Monticello Reservoir is known to suffer earthquakes, but they have nothing to do with this current series. It is also about 86 miles from the epicenter of the 1886 Charleston earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.0.

The US Geological Survey said the swarm had nothing to do with oil or natural gas production as there are no known reserves to be withdrawn from the area.

These earthquakes are also located about 140 miles northwest of Miter, Georgia, where a 3.9 earthquake earlier this month woke up much of Georgia.
