Experts say frequent earthquakes will not get worse

The US Geological Survey reported seven earthquakes on Wednesday and talked about how it happened.

Elgin, South Carolina – The South Carolina Emergency Management said Wednesday’s earthquakes were the longest continuous swarm of earthquakes in South Carolina’s history.

The swarm began again in December 2021.

The foci of two earthquakes were located in Elgin, 400 feet apart. News19 spoke with an employer who said she has lived in Elgin her whole life and has never felt an earthquake before.

“It was like a big Mac coming in like a big truck you know. That’s how I felt at first,” said Angie’s Kitchen and Bath, owner Angie’s Kitchen and Bath.

The two strongest earthquakes were in Elgin and ranked 3.4 and 3.6 on the Richter scale. At those points, cracks are not visible on the surface of the earth. The cracks are much deeper and where earthquakes come from, says Scott White of the University of South Carolina.

“This is a pre-existing line of weakness, so when pressure builds up in the ground, you have a pre-existing rift, that rift will reactivate and I think that’s what we’re seeing now,” White said.

The pressure comes from movement between tectonic plates.

In simpler terms, the Earth’s surface is made up of plates. These plates are constantly moving and moving, and places like South Carolina that lie in the middle of these plates feel stress or earthquakes as a result of shifting.

Scott adds that while earthquakes appear to be more frequent, that doesn’t mean they will get worse.

“One of the questions I often get is that these earthquakes get stronger over time. The answer to that is not really.”

Scott says no one can predict earthquakes before they happen.
