‘My home is a cemetery now’: the aftermath of the deadly earthquake in Afghanistan | world News

Muhammad Roshan lost 18 members of his family.

He said he believed that one body was still trapped under the bricks and mud where his home was located in rural Afghanistan.

A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake last week killed at least 1,000 people in eastern Afghanistan and its lasting impact is evident when you arrive.

Looking at the ruins, Muhammad collapses before us – he has no words to describe the feeling of losing everything.

“If we find them we will bury them. But it doesn’t matter if they are buried in the cemetery or here. This is a cemetery and so is my home now.”

It is not easy to get to Paktika province, not to mention the most isolated and destroyed village in the Barmal region.

In Schwegi China, more than 50 people have been killed, entire families wiped out, livelihoods completely destroyed – but aid is lacking.

Muhammad takes us to his new home, a tent with the most basic facilities. On the bed, his sister is lying with a broken leg, she has not yet had a doctor’s visit and is in great pain.

It’s rare for women to be allowed to talk to us but she wants people to hear what she has endured.

Bibi Hawwa told us, “When the earthquake hit I didn’t know what was going on, I was completely unconscious. When I came I was screaming for my brother and father and he asked me why they didn’t come to get me out.”

“I had no idea what the situation was like outside.”

Very little aid reaches this village, and its remoteness is the main reason why it is one of the last areas to receive any assistance.

The connection here is poor, there are no sanitary facilities in the surroundings and above all, the roads to get here are very difficult.

Aid agencies have yet to find a safe landing area for the helicopters, so all survivors can watch the vital support pass.

But what’s more moving here than anything else is the smell. It’s a game that will be with you for a long time, especially when you know what it is.

Bodies remain under the rubble, inaccessible without proper assistance.

All but a few houses in this village were flattened. The earthquake has cut off the water supply here, making basic life even more difficult.

Habibullah, who wants to explain to us the devastating impact of this earthquake on his home and life, contacted us. The villagers told me that his house was one of the most beautiful in the area and that he had spent a lot of money and time building it. He is now asking for help to rebuild it.

“We cannot live in these tents forever. The government should help us financially so that we can rebuild our homes. You can see all my belongings are lost and under the rubble.

“They should rebuild our homes for us, if they can’t give us money at least so we can rebuild them ourselves.”

Our interview with Habibullah was interrupted by the arrival of a male doctor. Habibullah himself needed medical attention, as did many in the village. They rush to get the help they need.

What is worrying, however, is that only men and boys receive treatment. A young man quickly descends the hill carrying seven-year-old Muhammad. He broke his leg in the earthquake and needs medical attention.

As he changed his clothes and treated the wounds, the doctor told us that Mohamed was an orphan – he lost his entire family in an instant when the earthquake shook this country. His physical pain will eventually ease, but the grief of losing the rest of his family will live with this boy forever.

In the neighboring village of Luara, there is a more stable and continuous support. International aid agencies have been able to create bases to help those who have lost everything.

MSF was one of the first responders on the ground. Dr. Tawfik has been here for nearly a week and receives new patients every day.

“You can see in the surroundings that there are no health facilities in this area. The roads are very difficult and also the communications are not very good, they are the reasons why the news is late for this area.”

He adds, “Right now, there’s a need for trauma care, so we set up a trauma unit here. And we’re seeing more and more infected wounds as well.”

House upon house completely wiped out – this is a village now made up of tents and piles of rubble.

One day, though, aid agencies will have to withdraw – but leaving is not an option for those who survived this devastating earthquake. They face so many months, maybe years, that they have to rebuild their shattered lives.
