The Church expands Venezuela earthquake relief through food, medical and emergency services

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is expanding its response to recent earthquakes in Venezuela by coordinating with government and non-profit agencies to provide food and other essential supplies to affected communities.

With ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency), the church provides 5,000 15-day food kits to families which include canned goods, energy bars, biscuits, powdered milk, bottled water and other non-perishable products.

In efforts with Project HOPE, funding from the church will help repair 7 health facilities, provide medicines and medical supplies, make psychological first aid available to more than 100,000 individuals and train 230 health workers and community responders in emergency response and first aid.

In cooperation with Catholic Relief Services, the Church of Jesus Christ will provide:

5 temporary shelters for 400 people 700 sets of household items (tarpaulins, blankets, mats and kitchen utensils) Water purification kits for 700 families, water filters for 1,075 families, trucked water for 12,000 people Ready-to-eat meals for 1,500 people Food baskets for 1,075 families 700 hygiene kits

These three projects combine for a total of $2.8 million provided by the church to help mitigate losses and support individuals and families during recovery in Venezuela.

The church also distributes hygiene kits, clean water, food and bedding to individuals. The Church’s support has also strengthened healthcare services by providing medicines, intravenous solutions, medical and surgical supplies and other essential items to five public hospitals in Caracas: Domingo Luciani Hospital, Caracas University Hospital, Concepcion Palacios Maternity Hospital, Vargas Hospital and Hugo Chavez Valley Maternity and Children’s Hospital.

Leading this effort to help local hospitals is Sheikh Pedro Hernandez, a doctor from the Seventies district of Punto Viejo, Venezuela. Donations will support vital areas, including trauma care, emergency surgery and general hospitalization.

The church also donated a satellite internet system to the Ministry of Religions and Sects. The high-speed, low-latency system will be installed at the Deputy Ministry’s Emergency Operations Center in La Guaira.

Satellite capacity is critical due to disruptions to traditional electrical and communications infrastructure. Officials said the technology will help facilitate real-time coordination, reporting of damage assessments, and dissemination of assistance to affected communities.

Sheikh Juan F. Zorrilla, who is from the 70th district of Caracas, officially presented the equipment to the vice ministry on behalf of the church. Richard Cox, Director of the Ministry’s Agency, accepted the donation on behalf of the government and expressed his appreciation for the contribution.
