This morning people across Yorkshire can feel the recent demolition of the tower at the Igborough power plant.

On Twitter this morning (24 July) Martin said: “10:01 Yorkshire. Sonic boom?” While Martin O’Brien joked, “An earthquake in Selby? Or maybe a big truck going to Tesco.”

However, in reality, it was not a sound explosion or earthquake, but the demolition of the final tower at the Igboro Power Plant.

The last remaining structures at the Eggborough power station were demolished today in what is known as a controlled collapse.

The demolition saw the two buildings collapse in a controlled manner using high-velocity explosives.

The 50,000-ton steel frame boiler house and the 20,000-ton reinforced concrete chimney collapsed within a period of 10 seconds.

The structures were previously part of the decommissioned Eggborough Power Station that closed in 2018.

People said they felt the effects of the explosion in their homes about 10 miles away.

“It definitely sounded like an earthquake or a bang,” Lana said on Twitter, while Victoria McLachlan added, “It was the chimney that was brought down in Eggborough. Our house shook!”

Jade, also feeling the effect, wrote: “I just woke up rudely by the Eggborough Power Station playing with explosives. I thought the house was collapsing.”
