The Venezuelan Yankees’ triple-A outfielders are feeling the pain of the earthquakes in their homeland

It has been one month since a pair of powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on June 24. More than 5,500 dead and 16,700 wounded. Damage estimated at billions of dollars has left thousands homeless.

Five players on the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are from Venezuela. Player Oswaldo Cabrera praises us from Guarinas. Pitcher Kervin Castro from Maracay. Thank God that all the players’ families are fine. However, they know friends of friends who have been affected and feel the pain of the devastation that has befallen their homeland.

“Obviously I am saddened by everything that happened and the situation they are experiencing in Venezuela,” Cabrera said. “I’m happy that all my close family members are here in the USA and my family there – my aunt, my uncle, my cousins ​​- are all safe. But obviously they are my people in Venezuela. My heart is still breaking because of all the things that happened there. It’s still my family, because all Venezuelans, we are family.”

On the day the earthquakes struck, Cabrera was in the major leagues with the Yankees. When he learned the news, he immediately called his fellow RailRiders to make sure their families were okay.

“Everyone has been texting and calling each other,” he said. “We knew everyone was okay, our close family. And out of all the bad things, this is a good thing, that all our families here are safe.”

Cabrera said seeing the photos and videos after the incident was difficult. There is a feeling of helplessness being here and not being able to help directly.

But baseball allows him to take his mind off things for a few hours.

“It’s really hard because there’s nothing you can do physically. That’s the hard part of this situation,” Cabrera said. “You want to get involved and help the people there. You want to support them in the right way. Anything we can do — foundation, charity, money, anything. But everything that’s happened, you feel like you want to be there with them.”

“The second day after everything happened, I deleted all my social media because everything I saw, in my mind I wanted to be there. It’s hard.”

When Christa Lutzick, RailRiders’ director of community relations, saw what happened, she knew she wanted to do something to help. Corona contacted her about doing a donation drive. So I got together with the players and they compiled a list of essential items they believe could help get those affected back on the road to recovery.

“We are doing our small part to help those affected,” Lutzik said. “Just seeing the pictures and videos of the devastation, it hurts. I feel so bad and I can’t even imagine how our Venezuelan players feel. Especially since they have friends and family who saw it in person. It’s a shame and I’m really grateful that I had the opportunity to help and try to get the community involved.”

Fans and community partners have responded. Around the RailRiders’ current home, the team has received donations such as water cans and pallets. Cleaning supplies such as sanitary napkins; Non-perishable food and snack items such as crackers; diapers; baby formula; Torches. Batteries. First aid kits; And clean, new or gently used clothes.

“I’ve seen videos and pictures now and I didn’t think about it at first, but the animals there were affected too,” Lutzik said. “So we will gladly take cat food and dog food as well.

“Anything and everything helps those affected in Venezuela. We are thousands and thousands of miles away, but we can make an impact here at NEPA with our players and our community.”

Although the campaign ends Sunday, Lutzik said donations will still be accepted through Friday. She is finalizing details to ship the items to an organization in Miami that will send them to Venezuela. Instead of donating money, she was asking people outside the area to go to Amazon, buy something and have it shipped to PNC Field.

Cabrera was overwhelmed by the response.

“It was nice to see the support and everyone trying to do their part and do something good for the situation,” he said. “It’s nice to see how everyone cares and it means a lot to us.”

It won’t stop with the donation campaign. Cabrera and Lutzik both said there are plans in the works for other things like a memorabilia auction that will help raise money for Venezuela and relief efforts.

After concluding the current home series against the Syracuse Mets on Sunday, the RailRiders will hit the road next week for a six-game series against the Iowa Cubs starting Tuesday. It is only the third time in franchise history – and the first time since 1990 – that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will play at Iowa State.
