Anchorage School District Closes Ursa Primary School Main in JBER due to earthquake fears

Anchorage School District officials say students and staff originally slated to begin classes at Ursa Primary Elementary School this fall will start elsewhere, following a report from an engineering company that said the school may not be safe during a future earthquake. Ursa Major is located at the Elmendorf-Richardson Joint Base.

“Out of great caution, I have decided to discontinue use of Ursa Major until further evaluation is made,” ASD Supervisor Garrett Bryant said in a letter to families and staff on Monday.

The school, built in 1952, has 397 students and is one of four primary schools located in JBER.

“The building will not operate with the level of collapse prevention that the district requires of its campus,” Lisa Miller, a spokeswoman for the Anchorage School District, said Monday afternoon.

The district notified parents and staff about the transfer on Monday. Miller said it was still too early to discuss specific plans. Ideally, the school’s students and staff would be transferred to the other three schools on the base, Miller said.

The school district is nearing the end of a review of 85 buildings constructed prior to the year 2000, which began in the wake of district-wide damage from the 7.1 earthquake in south-central Alaska in 2018.

Miller said a written copy of that report will be available this week. She acknowledged that there would be a lot of questions about the decision and said the area’s main priority was safety.
