A devastating earthquake leaves 5 dead and 100 injured in the Philippines

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Thursday inspected the damage caused by the powerful earthquake that left at least five dead and more than 100 injured in the northern provinces.

A 7-magnitude earthquake hit the mountainous Cordillera on Wednesday, causing landslides and rockfalls, damaging hundreds of homes and buildings, and cutting power and communications lines.

Social Welfare Minister Erwin Tolvo said Marcus Jr. went to Abra County, where the epicenter is, to visit the victims, many of whom camped out overnight amid hundreds of aftershocks.

“The president wants to witness first-hand the search and rescue operations as well as the agencies’ relief operations for earthquake victims,” ​​he added.

The National Disaster Management Agency said five people died, mostly after they were hit by collapsed buildings or debris, while 131 others were injured in the quake, which was felt by residents as far away as the Manila region.

Nearly 13,000 people were affected by the quake, which also destroyed dozens of hospitals, schools, government offices, and cracked roads and bridges.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where about 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes occur.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 220 people in the central Philippines in October 2013 was the last major earthquake to hit the country.
