Minor earthquake felt at St. Regis Falls in Saranac Lake | Saint Lawrence County

Street. REGIS FALLS – A slight earthquake was recorded Wednesday morning by the USGS Seismological Survey and was felt as far away as Saranac Lake.

The epicenter of the 2.5-magnitude earthquake was in St. Regis Falls and measured 8.1 kilometers, or 4.8 miles, below the surface.

“It’s still a shallow earthquake,” said Julie W. Dutton, a geophysicist with the USGS’ National Earthquake Information Center. “The furthest I could feel was 30 miles from the epicenter.”

She said they had received “about 20 credible reports” from people in the area, and two others

“You have to take a grain of salt if you really feel like it,” she said.

Ms. Dutton said the 2.5 measures the relative amount of energy released by the friction that occurs in the underground rift. In this case, it was enough to feel surfaced, but without causing harm. Some of those inside at the time may have experienced what felt like a car crashing into the building.

This initial noise is what scientists refer to as the P wave or compression wave, caused by the vibration of underground rock moving in a straight line from the epicenter. Ms. Dutton said the St. Regis Falls earthquake was small enough that the S wave might not have been felt above ground.

She said USGS equipment did not pick up on any aftershock, but it likely did. They generally don’t pick up anything below 2.5 degrees. It’s also possible, she said, that an aftershock was felt in one area, but not in others, depending on the subterranean geology involved.

“Sometimes earthquakes can have some very interesting scenarios where they are felt far away in one place and not in another,” Ms Dutton said.
