COVID must all remind us that we have a disaster recovery plan – Daily News
If the current COVID-19 environment teaches anything, it is that the crisis could strike Los Angeles with a sudden and devastating effect. First responders, health care providers, government and local agencies, and public health officials are working around the clock to iron out a malignant COVID-19 infection curve. Responding to this emergency should be a wake-up call for Los Angeles companies, local governments, social services, and California residents to prepare now for other future crises. At the top of the list of hazards: earthquakes.
Last year, during the July 4th holiday, as minds headed for a long weekend of barbecues and fireworks, millions of southern California residents felt the strength of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 in Ridgecrest, California. Satellite imagery showed cracks of 13 feet wide caused by a rift cutting parts of the highway, and bursting water pipes and clearly evolving desert vegetation. Since then, the region surrounding Ridgecrest has experienced other earthquakes and earthquakes, including a 3.6-magnitude earthquake on June 10, 2020.
Ridgecrest, along with other historical earthquakes in Northridge and San Francisco, states that California earthquakes are not a remote possibility, but a stark reality. Willingness can curb economic hardship, earthquake injury and death. Here are three ways in which California residents can prepare for the following inevitable earthquake:
make a plan. Homeowners and businesses that own their building must assess potential vulnerabilities and start repairing them. They must also identify the risks of falling and make repairs. In addition, companies must prepare instructions for employees, as well as an external plan to share updates and messages to audiences outside the organization.
Use technology. Earthquakes were once an unpredictable “no warning” event. The technology has enabled the introduction of an early warning tool called the MyShake app. MyShake, a component of the California disaster early warning system, integrates smart phone technologies with traditional warning and warning methods such as wireless emergency alerts (WEA). Earth motion sensors from all over the state detect earthquakes before humans feel them and send a warning to app users who may be at risk of “falling, covering, and going” before an earthquake strikes. Notifications can save seconds of warning, giving app users a few more moments to cover. It can take some time to download this app for your family or business in the event of a major earthquake.
Do exercises. It may sound like a previous conclusion that families, businesses, schools, and other organizations are not only planning for a disaster but doing it. However, plans often sit on the shelf. Companies should especially remember to review plans and require mandatory training in additional seismic preparedness activities for the job site or industry. Moreover, some staff may be assigned a specific role to implement procedures and help maintain the safety of people during crises. Major steps include turning off equipment, checking gas lines, and coordinating with local authorities. In addition, The Great California Shakeout occurs annually in October and provides a wealth of resources to help companies and families prepare and conduct earthquake training.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, southern California experiences about 10,000 earthquakes annually. However, California residents are usually not affected by earthquakes enough to consider acting and preparing. A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University less than a month after the Ridgecrest 2019 earthquake showed that only 52 percent of California residents felt prepared.
In light of these real facts and expectations of a major earthquake in California, a coordinated plan will serve the public, protect businesses and families, and help recover faster.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
