Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes Faizabad, Afghanistan

Afghanistan earthquake: No injuries or property losses have been reported so far.

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale hit the Afghan city of Faizabad on Thursday at around 00:38 am.

It was located 93 km southeast of Faizabad at a depth of 150 km.

“Earthquake magnitude: 4.9, occurred on 05-08-2022, 00:38:08 IST, latitude: 36.38 and long: 71.09, depth: 150 km, location: 93 km southeast of Faizabad,” the National Seismology Center tweeted.

No injuries or property losses were reported so far.

Earlier, on June 22, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit parts of Afghanistan including the capital Kabul killing more than 1,000 people in Barmal and Jayan districts of Paktika province and Sabra district of Khost province.

The disaster comes as Afghanistan continues to suffer a severe economic crisis since the Taliban took over, as US-led international forces withdrew after two decades of war.

In addition, at least 1,455 people were injured in three of the six worst-affected regions of Barmal, Jaén and Sibera – many of them seriously. More than 10,000 homes were destroyed.

The United Nations has allocated $10 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF) to support the Afghan people affected by the earthquake in the eastern part of the country.

The Royal Humanitarian Foundation of Bahrain has entered into an agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to distribute relief aid to support people affected by the recent earthquake in Afghanistan.

India also delivered relief aid shipments to support the earthquake-affected Afghan nationals.

The relief aid delivered by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, JP Singh, consisted of basic items including family tents, sleeping bags, blankets, sleeping mats, etc. to support the people of Afghanistan in the earthquake affected areas.

India has also deployed a technical team at the embassy in Kabul to coordinate the efforts of stakeholders for the delivery of humanitarian aid.
