Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes North Sumatra

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the North Sumatra region of Nias, around 00:39 in Indonesia West Time (WIB) on Friday, August 5. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the epicenter was 173 kilometers from Teluk Dalam city, North Sumatra.

In a statement, Acting Earthquake and Tsunami Center chief Daryono wrote that based on the epicenter and low epicenter, the earthquake was classified as a shallow earthquake caused by deformation of the outer India-Australia rise plate.

“An earthquake has a sliding mechanism,” Dariono said.

Initial reports indicate that there was no damage from the earthquake, and based on the BMKG analysis, the earthquake would not cause a tsunami.

The BMKG asks the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unfounded issues. People were also asked to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
