San Jose Earthquakes sign Brazilian defender Rodriguez on loan from Gremio

San Jose Earthquakes have completed the signing of Brazilian central defender Rodriguez on loan from Gremio.

Rodriguez is moving to PayPal Park on a 12-month loan, with Quakes retaining the option to either extend his stay through the MLS 2023 season or make the move permanent. The 24-year-old will take a place on the international roster.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to bring in a player of his age and quality,” said Chris Leach, Earthquakes general manager, in a club press release. “Rodriguez has competed with one of the most historic clubs in Brazil and has appeared in many of the best international competitions in South America. We are looking forward to him joining our locker room.”

San Jose completed Rodriguez’s transfer before the MLS secondary transfer window closed on Thursday. The defender started his career with ABC Futebol Clube before joining Gremio in January 2019.

Rodriguez has played 51 league games for Immortal Tricolor so far, including 44 in the Brazilian League, and is the second player to join MLS from Gremio this week after striker Elias Manuel signed with the New York Red Bulls.

Rodriguez’s signature adds vital depth to the heart of earthquakes following the departure of Francisco Calvo to Turkey’s Super Lig team Konyaspor. Rodriguez will fight for minutes alongside his compatriot Nathan and Tanner Besson.

San Jose is currently ranked 13th in the Western Conference and faces an uphill battle to reach the MLS Cup playoffs.
