ASD says the new report confirms the decision to close Ursa Primary Primary School due to safety concerns

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Engineers told the Anchorage School District in late July that the 70-year-old building at JBER had major structural problems and could collapse during the earthquake. PND Engineering has now released a written report that includes more details of their findings.

Engineers found cracks that they believe came from the 1964, magnitude 9.2 earthquake, but concluded that the building could fail in a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. Something the report noted wasn’t uncommon at the Anchorage Bowl.

Given the major safety issues, district spokeswoman Lisa Miller said the district made the right call when it decided to close Ursa Major and send students and staff to other schools. She said the district is now analyzing the report and is likely to get a second opinion when it begins evaluating the costs involved.

“This is the next step, understanding the building repair costs to do these seismic upgrades and repairs to make it safe for students and staff to come back,” Miller said. “It may take some time before the dollar numbers are available.”

Meanwhile, Ursa Major students were transferred to three other schools on the base. The district says its new schools may be crowded, but it has found enough space, so student-teacher ratios should not be affected.

But while the district initially said it would provide transportation for Ursa Major students to their new schools, on Thursday, Miller said base students would also be subject to the six-week suspension of the alternating bus route. Miller said they hope to reverse this situation as soon as possible.

“It’s a top priority because we know these families are already facing difficulties with this relocation,” she said. “So when we start hiring additional bus drivers, as soon as we can expand the routes, that will be the first community we focus on.”

Miller said it’s too soon to know if Ursa Major will be open next school year, but for planning purposes, the district is assuming it won’t.
