Utah civil engineer gets scholarship to explore com

Mohsen Shahendashti, associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, is evaluating the market potential of a risk-based assessment framework for urban water infrastructure after natural disasters.

For his project, he received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps, known as the I-Corps Program, which uses experiential education to help researchers gain insight into entrepreneurship, business startups, industry demands and other challenges.

Shahandashti’s evaluation framework hopes to bring to market developed from a previous NSF grant-funded project for 2019.

“We have proof of concept, and the potential impact of this grant in bringing the concept to market for significant widespread distribution,” he said. “We can take our research a step further and translate it into technology that can be used in industry.”

Funders and investment planners work with risk and assess it every day. Shahandasti’s research has taken the same principles of risk aversion and applied them to engineering and modeling methods to determine which parts of urban water pipeline systems must be replaced to withstand earthquakes.

Access to water can be difficult after large earthquakes. In the aftermath of the 1994 earthquake in Northridge, California, for example, residents were without water for about a week, and firefighters were unable to put out the fires due to damage to the city’s pipeline system. This earthquake had a magnitude of 6.7 compared to recent earthquakes of magnitude 6.4 and 7.1 in Southern California.

Shahendashti developed an algorithm that models the effects of earthquakes on waterline infrastructure, identifying vulnerabilities by looking at earthquakes and significant uncertainties in the network. The model outlines how best to use limited infrastructure funding to make pipelines less vulnerable to earthquake damage.

Jay Rosenberger and Victoria Chen—both professors in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering—and Civil Engineering Professor Simon Chau are principal investigators on the project.

Shahandashti said he hopes his research and the resulting product will allow cities to more accurately predict where pipelines are most vulnerable so they can proactively repair and replace pipes and avoid water cuts.
