NDRRMC: Earthquake drill held nationwide on September 8

MANILA, Philippines – A nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill is scheduled for September 8 as part of the country’s efforts to prepare for natural disasters, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Thursday.

NDRRMC spokesperson Mark Timball said upcoming exercises will also allow students to participate as some schools are already holding in-person lessons by then.

“She is happier now that the children are in the school and the exercises will be conducted there as well so that our schools and students can participate in this earthquake training,” he said at a public briefing.

(This will be more fun because the kids will already be at school, and the rehearsals will be held there so the students can participate.)

The exercises come on the heels of two recent strong earthquakes in Luzon and Mindanao, notably the 7.0-magnitude quake in Abra in July and the 5.5-magnitude quake in Davao del Sur this week.

The NDRRMC official also called on children who return to school to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect against respiratory illnesses.
