The US Geological Survey reported an earthquake in Anderson County

Anderson County, South Carolina (Fox Carolina) – An earthquake occurred in Anderson County early Thursday morning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The earthquake hit the Homeland Park area near Anderson around 2 a.m. It was a very weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1 but it was a shallow earthquake. Six people in the area reported feeling slight shaking.

And we had another earthquake in the area this week. Saturday morning, another weak earthquake was recorded in Mitchell County, just north of Spruce Pine. The depth of this earthquake was more than six meters, so no one reported feeling it.

It’s unusual to talk about earthquakes in northwest and northern North Carolina, but that’s almost unheard of.

So far, in 2022, there have been seven earthquakes in the area: two in the north of the state and five in western North Carolina. No earthquakes occurred in northeastern Georgia.

All earthquakes were minor, which is typical based on the type of faults found in our area.

“The kinds of faults we have in South Carolina are what I would call impact faults. They are old faults left by the initial collapse of that giant continent called Pangea and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. The faults have been very active this year with more than 80 earthquakes in South Carolina from January through August. Most of the activity was in the Midlands region.

With the earthquake in Anderson County on Thursday, some may be wondering if seismic activity is about to recover in the north of the state.

“When you look at our historical seismic records, and we have that from 30 to 40 years ago in the South Carolina Seismic Network. You probably do, well these six people [who felt the Anderson earthquake]At least, they’ll likely feel another sometime in the next 12 months or so,” White predicts.

Bottom line: Don’t expect northwestern North Carolina to get a swarm of earthquakes anytime soon.
