‘Help is coming’: UN relief director reviews Venezuela’s earthquake recovery

“People are in shock and despair; official meetings are not enough,” he said in a virtual press conference from the capital, Caracas, alongside representatives of the United Nations, Brazil, Turkey, the United States, Venezuela and the European Commission.

The earthquakes killed more than 3,500 people and injured at least 16,740 others, and 6,462 people were rescued, according to the United Nations Agency for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Providing a snapshot of the ongoing post-earthquake efforts involving 200 partners from Member States and the UN system, Mr. Fletcher said that humanitarian needs remain significant, with many communities in need of relief as search and rescue efforts decline.

Tons of life-saving emergency supplies have already arrived, but more sustained and coordinated support is needed.

“Is help coming?”

During a visit on Tuesday to the hard-hit area of ​​La Guaira amid the sounds and intermittent silence of bulldozers and rescue workers digging through the rubble, Mr. Fletcher recalled meeting a group of mothers who return to the site daily in the hope of finding their children.

“These mothers asked me last night: ‘Is help coming?’” the UN Humanitarian and Emergency Relief Coordinator said.

“Today’s meeting is our response to that. There can only be one answer to that question.”

Continuous efforts

He noted that teams from Israel to Mexico rushed to help in those critical first days, and said current initiatives include:

He added that the collective strategy must cover immediate priorities such as food, shelter and debris removal, along with long-term recovery and development.

He also noted that current needs are exacerbated by existing challenges, with nearly eight million people across Venezuela already in need of humanitarian assistance.

He needs to move on

After thanking donors and welcoming their continued support, he asked Member States and donors to take three actions:

Expanding the response, with $296 million needed to reach 1.3 million people over the next six months. Invest in basic life-sustaining services such as food, education and health care based on the national post-disaster assessment. Sustaining donor engagement, easing sanctions, and releasing frozen assets.

“We have to show that we will answer those mothers’ question: Help is coming,” he said. “Let us prove that global solidarity remains as strong as ever, and that we will continue on this path.”
