Elgin, South Carolina – David Horn remembers exactly where he was when the first earthquake struck his hometown of Elgin, South Carolina, on December 27, 2021.

He was relaxing on the front porch, while his wife was inside looking after their young grandson. Suddenly, Horn felt the ground shaking and heard a noise like thunder roaring across the sky.

And as soon as that happened, he said, I got off my seat and went and said to her, ‘That was an earthquake. That was more than 3 points.”

Horn used to live in Alaska, where earthquakes are more common, but his wife, Whitney Horn — who lives in South Carolina — said she wasn’t sure what had happened.

“Because I’ve never had an earthquake before,” she said. “We’re in South Carolina! You don’t have earthquakes to feel in South Carolina.”

Sure enough, it was a 3.3-magnitude earthquake – too small to cause damage but big enough to light up the town’s Facebook page with dozens of tantalizing comments.

At first, he thought it was cool, said David Horne.

“Wow! Earthquake!” he remembers thinking. “I heard there’s a big crack here. That’s all I thought about.”

Then it started what seemed like aftershocks – and never stopped. Days and months after that first quake, the ground was ringing while the trumpets were shopping or at night, while they were in bed, and the tremor showed no signs of stopping.

“I mean, literally, we seem to have an earthquake every week,” David Horne said. “It’s not a surprise anymore.”

The US Geological Survey has recorded more than 60 small earthquakes near the city since that first earthquake in December. The largest – a strength of 3.6 on the scale – fell in late June.

All of the vibrations have stunned geologists, who have said that this is the longest series of earthquakes in recent South Carolina history.

Scott Howard, a South Carolina geologist, was investigating these earthquakes with the help of other experts. Scientists refer to this phenomenon as an earthquake “swarm” — a series of small earthquakes with no apparent main shock, he said.

“Its power can be 2, 3, 1, 2,” he said. “It’s just kind of bouncing up and down.”

Howard said South Carolina is on a slight fault line, and the state has had swarms before. In the 1970s, a series of small earthquakes was traced to the creation of the Monticello Reservoir.

When the reservoir filled with water, Howard said, it put indirect pressure on the aquifer, causing a series of small earthquakes.

But this time, there is no clear explanation. It’s possible that heavy rains may have played a role earlier in the year, Howard said, but it’s hard for scientists to know for sure.

Many residents worry that the swarm will build up to face a major earthquake, although seismologists have said this is unlikely.

However, emergency officials have asked people to consider earthquake insurance, and some, like retired postal worker Phil Crowley, who moved to Elgin a year ago.

“You know, what you can control? You can control getting insurance. That’s it,” Crowley said.

He and his wife do not think that a major earthquake will strike, but they are worried.

“She’ll look at me when we sleep and say, ‘I hope it’s not tonight,'” he said.

If so, they are ready. They keep a couple of bags full of clothes and other necessities sitting by their front door, just in case.

As for earthquake safety, the American Red Cross says, “Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you’re sure it’s safe to go outside.”
