Earthquakes shake Liechtenstein parliament during earthquake insurance debate

In the middle of a debate in the Landtag in Liechtenstein on Thursday afternoon, people felt a 4.1-magnitude earthquake – just as MPs debated whether the small European nation needs to impose a lockdown in case of earthquakes.

Video footage posted by Landtag shows how two tremors were felt in the building within seconds.

The first quake smiled Freedom Party MP Bettina Petzold-Mähr, who was speaking.

The second, larger earthquake shook the Parliament building even more violently, prompting the head of the Landtag, Albert Frick, to pause the session and vacate the hall.

Liechtenstein police said they had received a “large number of calls from concerned citizens” following the 2.4 and 3.9 magnitude quakes.

“So far, no personal injuries or property damage have been reported,” they added in a statement.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the largest earthquake occurred at 13.57 CET, with its epicenter about 19 kilometers south of the Austrian city of Dornbirn.

The quake was reportedly felt by residents in parts of Austria and Switzerland, as well as the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany.

In October 2020, Iceland’s Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir was interrupted during a newspaper interview when a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit the country.

Earlier that year, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was interrupted by earthquake during a live television interview.
