Missouri earthquake exercise “ShakeOut” coming October 20 – Newstalk KZRG

The 4.0 earthquake in southeastern Missouri last year reminded many that the New Madrid seismic zone is an active seismic zone and the importance of the ‘drop, cover and wait’ exercise

On November 17, 2021, southeastern Missouri experienced the largest earthquake in 30 years. The epicenter of the 4.0-magnitude earthquake was near Poplar Bluff and was felt by residents of the region, St. Louis, and seven other states. It was a reminder of the strength of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, one of the most seismically active areas in the country, centered on the Missouri Butyl.

To prepare for future earthquakes, registration is now open for the 2022 Central US Great Earthquake maneuver “ShakeOut” on October 20. Missouri is one of the 14 participating central US states that could be affected by the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

“The fourth earthquake last year reminded us that Missouri is home to a large, active seismic zone,” said State Emergency Management Agency Administrator Jim Remmillard. “Earthquakes happen without warning, so it’s important to take part in the ShakeOut exercise and practice now, so you know exactly what to do when an earthquake strikes.”

At 10:20 a.m. Thursday, October 20, hundreds of thousands of Missourians will practice the “Drop, Cover, Hold On” technique:

* Fall on your hands and knees. * Cover your head and neck with your hands and arms under a table or desk if you can; and *continue until shaking stops.

Studies show that in developed countries with modern structures, falling debris is the most common source of earthquake injuries. Experts advise that when an earthquake occurs in the United States, falling, covering and holding on is the best way to protect yourself from falling debris.

Once registered, participants receive regular updates about the exercises, as well as information about earthquake preparedness and safety. The New Madrid Seismic Zone, centered in southeastern Missouri, is one of the most seismically active areas in the country, averaging over 200 small earthquakes annually.
