Taiwan earthquake: The second strong earthquake hits near Taitung

A strong earthquake shook much of Taiwan today, toppling at least one building, trapping two people inside and knocking part of a commuter train off the tracks at a station.

The 6.8-magnitude quake was the largest of dozens to hit the island’s southeast coast since Saturday evening, when a 6.4-magnitude quake hit the same area.

The Taiwan Meteorological Bureau said the quake’s epicenter was in the town of Qichang, at a relatively shallow depth of seven kilometers.

The island’s central news agency said a three-story building with a 7-11 convenience store on the ground floor and homes on the upper floor collapsed in the nearby town of Yuli.

Two were rescued and workers were in contact with two other trapped people.

Pictures showed the two upper floors stretched across and to the other side of a narrow street, with electrical wires pulled from the building.

Police and firefighters rushed to the collapse of a bridge on a two-lane road in what appeared to be a rural part of Yuli, where one or more vehicles may have fallen, the Central News Agency said.

Quoting the railway administration, the agency said a parachute on a platform at Dongli Station in Fuli Town, between Yuli and the earthquake epicenter in Qichang, hit a train, causing three of the cars to tilt at an angle. The shaking was felt at the northern tip of the island in the capital, Taipei.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for several southern Japanese islands near Taiwan, but later raised them.
