Statement by WHO Director-General on Pakistan – 17 September 2022
I am deeply concerned about the possibility of another disaster in Pakistan: a wave of disease and death after this disaster, linked to climate change, which has severely affected vital health systems and left millions vulnerable. The water supply is disrupted, forcing people to drink contaminated water, which can spread cholera and other diarrheal diseases. Stagnant water allows mosquitoes to breed and spread vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue. Health centers have been flooded, their supplies damaged, and people have moved away from their homes, making it difficult for them to access normal health services. All of this means more unsafe births, more untreated diabetes or heart disease, and more children not getting vaccinated, to name just a few of the health impacts.
But if we act quickly to protect health and provide essential health services, we can significantly reduce the impact of this coming crisis. Health workers in Pakistan are stretched to the limit as they do everything they can to provide critical services amid the devastation. Almost 2,000 health facilities were completely or partially damaged. Together with the Government of Pakistan, the UN and NGO partners, WHO is setting up temporary health facilities and medical camps and helping to supply medicines to other health centres. We are increasing disease surveillance so outbreaks can be detected early and people can get the treatment they need.
The government and partners are providing safe drinking water and access to toilets to reduce the risk of disease caused by dirty water. WHO has provided water and salt purification kits for oral rehydration to treat diarrhea. Partners also help provide safer accommodation and bed nets to protect against mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
WHO immediately released US$10 million from the WHO emergency fund, which enabled us to deliver essential medicines and other supplies.
I thank the donors for their quick response to the urgent appeal. We continue to assess the scale of the crisis and will issue a revised appeal shortly. I urge donors to continue to respond generously so that together we can save lives and prevent even more suffering.
