SSU was shaken after the earthquake – Sonoma State Star

Sonoma State University students were rocked by a 4.4 earthquake, and the subsequent 4.3 aftershock, that occurred Tuesday, September 13 at 6:39 p.m. The epicenter was two miles north of Santa Rosa.

Many students were worried about what might happen next. Some called friends and family to make sure they were okay. “I called my mom right away because she’s the first person I talk to when something like this happens,” said Malia Carreño, a senior psychologist.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department kept people informed of the earthquake’s aftermath via Twitter, Tuesday night. “Santa Rosa Fire has responded to several reports of gas odors, gas leaks, fire alarms as well as stalled elevators. There are no reports of any earthquake-related injuries at this time,” SRFD tweeted.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “Researchers say the Rodgers Creek Fault that runs from San Pablo Bay north through central Sonoma County was responsible for Tuesday night’s shocks.” The Rodgers Creek fault is also a right lateral slip fault, which means there are vertical fractures in the Earth’s crust where the plates rub against each other. When tectonic plates move, pressure builds until the plates overcome friction and move, causing an earthquake.

Once the shocks occurred, an emergency alert was sent by the USGS ShakeAlert to mobile devices that read, “Down, cover, wait, protect yourself.”

Rene Cassano, Chief Communications Officer, had a similar reaction to the earthquake as the alarm sent out. “My reaction to Tuesday’s earthquake was to stop and wait,” Cassano said. “It didn’t feel like a really big earthquake and I wasn’t sitting in a dangerous place, so I waited to see if it was stronger.”

The Chronicle also said: “Scientists estimate that these associated faults have a 33% chance of a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or higher before 2043.”

Matti Mukherjee, SSU professor of geology and chair of the GEP department, has the same opinion about a bigger earthquake soon. He explained that “soon” it could be a few million years away, but as time progresses, the likelihood of a larger earthquake increases. Mookerjee said, “In general, paleo-seismologists believe that the Rodgers Creek Fault (closest to campus) has the highest major earthquake potential of any of the other faults related to the San Andreas Bay area. It would not be surprising to see a magnitude 6+ earthquake on the Rodgers Fault system Creek Hayward in the Next Few Decades”.
