Leaning tower building hit by Taiwan earthquake in 2018, not 2022

The image of a leaning tower has been widely circulated in publications claiming to show the effects of a powerful earthquake that struck Taiwan on September 18, 2022. However, the image is outdated. It was taken after the earthquake that hit the island in February 2018, killing 17 people, including 14 inside the tower.

A Burmese-language Facebook post shared on a page with more than 30,000 followers read: “A 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan at 2:45 pm Taiwan time.”

“There have been reports of building collapses and casualties in Yuli, Hualian County, but official figures have not yet been confirmed.”

The post was published on September 19, a day after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Taiwan, destroying roads and destroying a number of homes in Yuli Township with at least one person killed.

A smaller earthquake hit the same area the day before, while local media reported no injuries or damage.

Taiwan experiences earthquakes regularly as the island is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates.

However, the photo was shared in the wrong context.

2018 earthquake

A reverse image search and keyword search on Google showed that the photo was taken after an earthquake hit Hualien, a popular tourist city in Taiwan in February 2018.

Taiwan News published various images of the tower in an article on February 7, 2018, reporting that the earthquake killed 17 people and injured more than 290.

Photo credits identify the building as Yun Tsui Apartment Building, and the photo is attributed to Taiwan’s state-run Central News Agency (CNA).

A total of 17 people were killed across the eastern coastal city, 14 of them in the Yun Tsui building.

The building’s developer, an architect and a civil engineer were all jailed for five years in 2019 for neglecting building safety rules.

The tower was later demolished, footage from Taiwanese Apple Daily shows.
